Sources and method

Every game page combines several independent sources and shows each one separately, so you can see where a claim comes from.

1. Steam's AI Generated Content Disclosure

Since January 2024 Valve asks developers to disclose AI-generated content that ships with their game or appears on its store page, and AI that generates content while the game runs. We read every game's disclosure from Steam's public store data and refresh it daily. When a disclosure is added, changed or removed, we keep the previous versions.

Disclosures are written by developers themselves. A game with no disclosure hasn't declared AI use — that is not proof it uses none.

2. GameAICheck reading

Disclosures are free text, so we use a language model to sort each one into categories (art, voice, music, writing, translation, code, store/marketing, live generation), rate how much of the game it covers, and write the one-line summary at the top of each page. Each reading names the model that produced it. The developer's own words are always quoted in full below it.

We are rolling these readings out gradually, most-played games first. Until a game has one, its page shows the Remove AI Slop rating instead.

3. AI judgments

Language models review each game's disclosure together with the production signals and any curator notes, and give a structured judgment: how much of the game is AI-generated, and how much production effort the game shows. These judgments are published as they are, always labelled with the model that made them and its confidence. They are opinions from a model, not verified facts.

4. Remove AI Slop

Remove AI Slop from Steam is an open-source (MIT) browser extension that rates each disclosure with keyword rules: minor, some, or mostly AI-generated. We run its classifier unchanged and show its verdict as a second opinion.

5. Steam curators

Several Steam curators track AI use, including AI that developers did not disclose. We show their notes quoted as written, with a link to the curator. They are opinions we have not verified.

If a page is wrong — you are the developer, or a curator note is mistaken — use the form on the game page or contact us. We review every report.
